Harrow Council encourages residents to ‘keep safe and shop local’

When was the last time you visited your favourite local book shop, café or hairdresser?

Harrow businesses from big name retailers to small independents are counting the cost of Covid. That’s why we’re calling on everyone to get behind our Shop Local campaign – let’s rediscover Harrow’s high streets, shopping centres and markets and put the pounds in our pockets back into the community.

There are many ways you can help local businesses– both online and offline. Whether its spending £5 in your corner shop, leaving your home office for a local lunch break or starting your Christmas shopping early – it all makes a difference.

Shop local to get out of the house, for leisure, for customer care and to connect with your community. And just don’t shop local – eat local and get services local too.

Deputy Leader of Harrow Council, Cllr Keith Ferry, said: “Local businesses are determined to succeed and are constantly thinking of new ways to operate in these challenging times. It is admirable to see their passion, drive and perseverance.

“So, let’s get behind this Shop Local campaign and support local businesses today. Harrow is a thriving borough and deserves to stay that way.”

A lot of work has gone into making it as safe as possible to shop local. The council and Harrow’s Business Improvement District have been helping local retailers to become Covid secure.

That means full compliance with Government safety guidelines, introducing signage, queuing systems and one-way flow measures.

We’ve also widened pavements in busy thoroughfares to help shoppers maintain social distancing. When you’re shopping, remember to keep two metres from people you don’t live with, wear a face covering and wash your hands often, especially before eating and first thing when you get back home.
