A new strain of Covid-19 that combines delta and omicron has been found in Cyprus, according to reports.
The discovery was made by Leondios Kostrikis, professor of biological sciences at the University of Cyprus and head of the Laboratory of Biotechnology and Molecular Virology, and his team, Bloomberg reported.
Leondios Kostrikis said: “There are currently omicron and delta co-infections and we found this strain that is a combination of these two,”
Kostrikis appeared via an interview with Sigma TV. The discovery was named “deltacron” due to the identification of omicron-like genetic signatures within the delta genomes, he said.
Deltacron cases were found in 25 samples taken in Cyprus. 11 of these samples were from patients hospitalised with Covid and 14 from the general public, according to Cyprus Mail
