Former Eastenders actress dies in house fire

Anna Karen, who was best known for playing Aunt Sal in EastEnders has died in a house fire.

The actress is also famous for playing Olive in TV sitcom On The Buses.

Karen, 85, sadly died following a house fire in her home in East London.

The British-South African actress Had a recurring role in EastEnders, and often showed up unexpected as the Auntie of Phil and Grant Mitchell.

She sadly passed away on Tuesday evening.

Emergency services were reportedly at the site of the fire at 10:20pm, but despite their best efforts Anna died at the scene.

Tributes have been posted on twitter for the actress.

An EastEnders spokesperson has said: “We are deeply saddened to hear that Anna Karen has passed away… Our love and thoughts are with Anna’s family and friends.”

Carol Challis, widow of John Challis, tweeted: “So sorry to hear that Anna Karen has died.John and I met her often at conventions and she was such a lovely lady.Not fair.”

Morris Bright, chair of Elstree Studios said in a tweet: “Devastated to hear On the Buses star, actress Anna Karen, has died in a house fire aged 85. She was the loveliest of ladies. Here she is with Reg Varney & OTB writers Ronalds Chesney & Wolfe discussing the iconic role of Olive with me back in 2002. Remembered with huge affection.”

Kay Burley tweeted: ”Terribly sad news that Anna Karen – Olive from On The Buses – has died in tragic circumstances. May she rest in peace. She was 85”

Cheryl Baker tweeted: “I have just heard the awful news that my fabulous mate, #AnnaKaren has died in a house fire. What an horrific way to die, I can’t bear to think about it. I adored her – She was an absolute treasure, both on and off the screen.”

Jake Wood, who plays Max Branning in Eastenders tweeted: “So sad to hear of the passing of Anna Karen. Loved working with her, so funny and full of character RIP x”

Author David Quantick tweeted: “I’m very sorry to hear about Anna Karen. She was a superb comic actress who I very briefly got to work with. RIP.”
