Zarah Sultana, Labour MP for Coventry South tweeted: “To take over today so that ministers can get back to work and we can choose a new Conservative leader to try and repair the damage and rebuild trust.”

“Just so we’re clear: Sunak, Javid and all the other Tory MPs abandoning Boris Johnson aren’t acting from “principle” or “honour”. They’ve known what he’s like from the beginning. They’re abandoning him because they now think his leadership threatens their interests. That’s it.”

MP for Stratford-on-Avon, Chancellor of the Exchequer, Nadhim Zahawi said in a tweet: “Prime Minister: this is not sustainable and it will only get worse: for you, for the Conservative Party and most importantly of all the country. You must do the right thing and go now.”

Rt Hon Ben Wallace MP, UK Secretary of State for Defence & MP for Wyre and Preston North, tweeted: “A number of us have an obligation to keep this country safe,no matter who is PM. The Party has a mechanism to change leaders and that is the mechanism which I advise colleagues to use. In the meantime, the public would not forgive us if we left these Offices of State empty.”

Leader of the Labour Party, Keir Starmer said in a tweet: “The Conservatives have overseen 12 years of economic stagnation, declining public services and empty promises. We don’t need to change the Tory at the top – we need a proper change of government. We need a fresh start for Britain.”
