Boris Johnson will resign as Leader of the Conservative party today, Sky News reports.
A spokesman for Number 10 said: “The prime minister will make a statement to the country today.”

George Freeman, who announced he was resigning as science minister tweeted: “Boris Johnson needs to hand in the seals of office, apologise to Her Majesty and advise her to call for a caretaker prime minister.

Rt Hon Ben Wallace MP, UK Secretary of State for Defence & MP for Wyre and Preston North, tweeted: “A number of us have an obligation to keep this country safe,no matter who is PM. The Party has a mechanism to change leaders and that is the mechanism which I advise colleagues to use. In the meantime,the public would not forgive us if we left these Offices of State empty.”
Leader of the Labour Party, Keir Starmer said in a tweet: “The Conservatives have overseen 12 years of economic stagnation, declining public services and empty promises. We don’t need to change the Tory at the top – we need a proper change of government. We need a fresh start for Britain.”
