In what has been described as the most successful night in English football history since the 1966 World Cup victory, England fans up and down the country have been celebrating the triumphant England win over Germany in the 2022 Euro cup final.
Prince William led the tributes tweeting: “Sensational. An incredible win. The whole nation couldn’t be prouder of you all. Wonderful to see history in the making tonight at Wembley, congratulations!”
Prime Minister Boris Johnson added: “Football has come home! A stunning victory by the Lionesses.
“Huge congratulations to Sarina, Leah, and the whole team. Football pitches across the country will be filled as never before by girls and women inspired by your triumph.”
We asked Harrow residents to give us their thoughts on the victory, many of which offered their congratulations to the England team after their iconic achievement…
“Well done ladies. We need to start a petition to be awarded a national holiday as they promised for the men tournament. We brought it home, so why not reward them as promised for the men tournament.”
“What a match! Congratulations ladies. Very well derserved. So nice to bring football home”
“A truly inspirational team of ladies – that played like a team and worked to achieve a win together. So pleased for their happiness and success – well deserved !!”
“Well done ladies. The only thing I would say is that the media is saying only major win since 1966, however, England under 20s won the U20 World Cup not that long ago and they have been totally forgotten. Don’t rule out that achievement if you want to encourage youngsters into the game. It seems like that didn’t matter to the media.”
“My 12yr old grandson said… But its girls, its not the same..Then refused to go home until it finished and said. Wow……. That was AWESOME. OK NANA. you were right. As he was running around the room cheering… Go lionesses!!!!”
“56 years of hurt finally ended, at Wembley, against Germany by the lionesses who weren’t even allowed to play when England last won anything Hopefully now ladies football will start being taken seriously because the lionesses are bringing it home.”
“Fantastic achievement. I am so proud of you all. At last you are getting the recognition you richly deserved. Last two minutes were really agonising. I had my heart in my mouth. Heartiest congratulations.”
“Well done and congratulations to you the Lionesses. Applaud the team for not being aggressive like the German team who liked to lock their feet and trip the home team.”
“Brilliant well done girls you worked so hard and never gave up the dream of bringing the cup home fantastic.”
“A moment to be remembered for many many years to come. This is just the start of what I hope will be a big change in the sport for Womens football moving forward, these women are trailblazers for the game”
“As a female, I think it’s a fantastic achievement and yes an inspiration. As a football fan I wonder how many who were there today would get off their backside to go to a football match in a cold wet November night.”
