Living Streets launches search for Harrow’s walking champions

Living Streets, the UK charity dedicated to promoting everyday walking, is excited to announce the launch of the Charles Maher Award – Walking Champion 2023, and is calling for nominations from the Harrow community.

This prestigious award aims to recognise individuals, local groups, or organisations in Harrow who have made remarkable efforts to promote walking and wheeling in the area.

The Charles Maher Award, named in honour of the late Charles Maher, a prominent campaigner and longtime supporter of Living Streets, celebrates the creativity and impact of those who have worked tirelessly to improve the walking infrastructure and culture in Harrow. The award acknowledges their contributions to making the streets safer and more attractive, enabling residents to lead active lifestyles and fostering a strong sense of community.

Stephen Edwards, Chief Executive of Living Streets, noted the importance of recognising the unsung heroes who are driving positive change: “People across the UK are doing incredible things to improve the places we live for walking and wheeling – and they deserve recognition. Many individuals, groups and organisations work tirelessly to make our streets safer and more attractive so that people can be active and feel connected to our communities.

“You might know someone campaigning for safer streets for people using a wheelchair or pushchair, a parent who’s helped make walking to school safer for local families, or an organisation encouraging older adults to get out and about. Whoever it is, we want to hear about them.”

The nomination process for the Living Streets Charles Maher Award is now open, inviting self-nominations or nominations of deserving individuals, local groups, organisations, or local authorities in Harrow. The deadline for submissions is midnight on July 29. Living Streets Members will then vote to determine the top nominee, who will be honoured at the organisation’s Annual General Meeting later this year.

To nominate a Walking Champion in Harrow, interested individuals can visit the Living Streets website at livingstreets.org.uk/maher and complete the nomination form.
