The parliamentary constituency of Uxbridge and South Ruislip is gearing up for a by-election on Thursday, July 20, following the resignation of Boris Johnson as a Member of Parliament.
Residents registered to vote in the constituency will begin receiving their poll cards via mail from June 23.
The poll cards will provide important details on how to arrange a postal or proxy vote for those who are unable to visit their designated polling station on election day. Residents living in the Uxbridge and South Ruislip constituencies must ensure they are registered to vote by the deadline on July 4. Further information on voter registration can be found at www.hillingdon.gov.uk/register-vote.
Recent legislation implemented in May 2023 mandates that all individuals voting in person must present a valid form of photo identification. Accepted forms of ID include current or expired UK passports, and photo driving licenses (including provisional licenses), as long as the photo still resembles the individual.
Only original documents are accepted, while photographs, copies, or digital versions saved on electronic devices are not permitted. Additional approved photo IDs can be found at www.hillingdon.gov.uk/voter-ID.
Those who lack any form of accepted photo ID or possess outdated identification that no longer resembles their appearance can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate, provided they are already registered to vote. The deadline for applications for the upcoming by-election is 5 p.m. on July 12.
It is important to note that the requirement to present a photo ID at polling stations will apply to all future local elections, local by-elections, recall petitions, and UK parliamentary by-elections. Additionally, starting from October 5, it will also be mandatory during general elections (excluding by-elections).
A complete list of candidates running in the by-election will be made available at www.hillingdon.gov.uk/by-election from 5 p.m. on June 23, 2023. This website will also provide further information regarding the upcoming by-election.
