Local author unveils historical tapestry with ‘Edgware Through Time’ book

Edgware takes a step back in time through the lens of “Edgware Through Time,” a new book featuring a collection of 96 meticulously curated historic photographs mixed with present-day shots. Spanning three centuries, the book delves into the millennium-long history of Edgware, providing a glimpse into its evolution and transformation.

The North London town, boasting a parish dating back to the Middle Ages, holds deep connections to the ancient Watling Street. The Edgware Road draws its name from this historical locale, with the former village serving as a pivotal stop for travelers entering and exiting London. The introduction of the Underground extension in 1924 marked a significant turning point, propelling the traditional village into a rapidly evolving suburban town.

Author Joshua Thomas, from Edgware himself, drawing inspiration from Alfred Porter’s works in 1984 and 1991, curated a diverse array of photos, transcending both time and geographical boundaries. Unlike its predecessors, this new book spans a broader time spectrum, capturing the essence of Edgware’s evolution over the years. The collection not only showcases scenic views and old pubs from the village days but also integrates images from more recent decades, fostering a connection for readers across generations.

The book serves as a guided tour through the town, unraveling forgotten buildings, local legends, and the transformative impact of transportation from the capital. From Brockley Hill to Broadfields, Station Road to Stonegrove, the book encapsulates the essence of Edgware’s journey.
