The Art of Harrow – Exploring the borough’s artistic scene

Harrow folk are a creative lot and, as well as many places for students to study art, including the University of Westminster Harrow campus and Harrow College, the borough is also home to a number of fantastic art galleries and, in this article, we’re going to go browsing through some of these:

Battels: If combining a fry up with a side of art is your cup of tea then look no further than Battels on Harrow on the Hill’s High Street. Founded in 2018, Battels Cafe de Arts offers customers the chance to buy unique drawings and paintings by local artists at extremely reasonable prices. As the name suggests, Battles is also a cafe and is open for breakfast, brunch and lunch serving dishes such as cream tea, high tea and salads and snacks as well as coffee and soft drinks.

The Gallery at HAC: While Harrow Arts Centre may be best known for performing arts such as concerts and plays, it’s also home to three actual art galleries – The White Cube Gallery, the Elliott Hall corridors, and a feature within the Backstage Bar. Harrow Arts Centre is one of our borough’s most beloved venues and its galleries are well worth a visit.

London Gallery West: Nestled inside the Harrow campus of the University of Westminster is a hidden gem for art lovers. The London Gallery West – which takes up two exhibition spaces inside the university – has been created to showcase the work of past and present students as well as hosting national and international artists. As well as offering the public a glimpse of the work being created at the University of Westminster, the exhibition spaces are host to a number of exciting events during the year.

If you missed the recent Echoes in the Liminal visual meditation exhibition, check out the website for more art events coming soon.

The Art Gallery Ruislip: With a focus on customer sales, The Art Gallery in Ruislip offers a wide selection of drawings, paintings, and sculptures as well as framing services. The gallery is open from Monday to Saturday between 10.00 am and 4.00 pm but, if you’re not able to make it to Ruislip, you can also shop online.

With spring not yet on the horizon, visiting one of Harrow’s fantastic art galleries is a great way of whiling away a few hours of a weekend – and a free one too (unless, of course, you fall in love with a painting that you absolutely have to have in pride of place at home).
