Students from Park High School in Stanmore travel to New York and Washington DC

A group of 35 A-Level Politics students from Park High School in Stanmore seized a unique educational opportunity during this February’s half term, heading on a trip to New York City and Washington DC, made possible through the Turing Scheme’s funding.

Immersed in American history and politics, the students explored iconic landmarks and institutions, including Ellis Island, the 9/11 Museum, the United Nations headquarters, and the Capitol Building to name but a few.

They also fostered cross-cultural connections at the Bronx School of Science and gained insights into American governance at Theodore Roosevelt High School. The trip culminated in a moment of reflection at Arlington National Cemetery.

Overall, the experience was hailed as a huge success, igniting students’ passion for political engagement and broadening their understanding of global affairs and cultures.

One student reflected: “I really enjoyed going up the Empire State Building and we visited some excellent museums, the Holocaust Museum in DC was extremely well put together.

“I think what I enjoyed the most was the opportunity to experience the different types of American schools, talking to the students and observing their lessons. I enjoyed learning about the Smithsonians, and I will try to keep in touch with the people I made friends with”.

Louise Cramp who led the trip said: “It was an honour to take our students on such a formative trip. We were delighted to visit two very different host schools as well as the opportunity to see some of the iconic sights of New York and Washington”.
