Everything you need to know ahead of May’s Mayor of London election

2024 is gearing up to be a pretty big year for UK politics with, in all likelihood, a General Election on the cards. In the meantime though, we’re going local and sharing everything you need to know ahead of May’s Mayor of London election.

Mayor of London

The current (Labour) Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, took the office in 2016 and, on Thursday the 2nd of May, he’ll be battling it out with two other candidates as he tries to secure another term. The Mayor of London is responsible for setting budgets and meeting targets in order to improve life in our capital for those who live and work there and the key tasks are:

  • Making it easier for people to move in and around the city
  • Improving London’s environment
  • Helping the capital’s businesses to thrive
  • Providing Londoners with more affordable housing
  • Giving young people in London more opportunities

The Mayor of London is elected by the Capital’s residents and, in order to have your say, you must:

  • Be registered to vote
  • Live in London
  • Be at least 18 years old on the day of the elections
  • Be a British citizen, a European Union citizen or a Commonwealth citizen who has or does not require leave to remain in the UK

In order to vote for the next Mayor of London, you first need to know who they are and, in this section, we’re introducing the 2024 candidates for London Mayor:

The Candidates

Sadiq Khan – Labour

The current Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, is once more throwing his hat in the ring for this important job. Mr Khan’s election promises include more – and improved – social housing, greener transport in London and a pledge to tackle crime.

In 2021, Sadiq Khan secured the role with 40% of the votes and a poll conducted in November 2023 showed that Mr Khan’s support was at 50% compared to his nearest competitor at 25%.

Susan Hall – Conservative

The biggest threat to Sadiq Khan’s reign comes in the form of Conservative Harrow Councillor Susan Hall. Born in Willesden, Susan has served on Harrow London Borough Council since 2006 and on the London Assembly from 2019 to 2023. Susan’s main manifesto points are reducing crime, scrapping the extension of the ULEZ scheme and building more affordable homes in London.

Zoe Garbett – Green

Green Party MP for Dalston and Hackney, Zoe is a passionate campaigner and advocate for Londoners and her policies centre around environmental issues as well as stamping out injustices and inequality.

Poll position

These days, politics is rarely out of the headlines and it’s easy to become weary of it all. Electing the Mayor of London is, however, of vital importance as it can dictate the quality of life of millions of people. Because of this, it’s important to familiarise yourself with the candidates and what they stand for before the election day arrives.
