New archery sessions start at Bannister Sports Centre in Harrow

Harrow’s sports scene just got an added boost with the introduction of VS Archery’s beginner courses and practice sessions at Bannister Sports Centre.

Head Coach Victoria Saduikis shared insights with Harrow Online about the journey of VS Archery and the growing interest in the sport as they launch in the borough.

“VS Archery began only a year ago in March 2023,” she said. “As a coach, I had been shooting for 20 years and teaching archery for 8 years at other venues but wanted to start up a new space for archery within Harrow.”

The quest to find the right venue wasn’t without its challenges, Victoria explained. “With sports venues being so oversubscribed, expensive or too small it was more difficult than we thought! Luckily we contacted the staff at Bannisters Sports Ground which ticked all the boxes and even had archery take place there in the past.”

VS Archery prides itself on offering a comprehensive experience for beginners, with courses covering everything from assembling a bow to competition scoring.

“At VS Archery, we run beginners courses and have a go sessions alongside practice sessions so new archers can see an example of more experienced archers shooting and can make friends and socialise with the regulars so showing up to sessions after the course isn’t so daunting,” she added.

“Archery is one of the few sports where various age groups can all participate at the same time, a place where you can see children, parents and grandparents all on the shooting line together.”

Reflecting on the growth of VS Archery, Victoria noted the increasing enthusiasm and team spirit within the community. “In the beginning, because we were new the first session we ran only had 2 people turn up, but now a recent session had a total 17 people show up to shoot!

“Recently we have even had people going to competitions who have been shooting for only a few months and it’s been really lovely seeing the enthusiasm and team spirit grow.”

The supportive environment is also credited to the help of Bannister Sports Ground. “We’ve been running for only a year and seeing VS Archery grow and evolve has a been a massive joy, and the staff at Bannisters have been really great and so helpful in getting us started and supporting us throughout the year,” she said.

For those intrigued by the sport or seeking a new fun activity to try, VS Archery invites residents to check it out. “Have-a-go sessions are also geared to total beginners and are a great way to test out if you would enjoy archery (or if you just want to try archery for a day!)”.
