The Golden Years in Harrow – Activities available for retirees in our borough

Retirement often signals a gentler way of life after decades of hard work but not every retiree wants to put their feet up and relax. In this article, we’re looking at some of the great activities available for retirees in Harrow.

Knitting For Wellbeing

While it may be a bit of a ‘grandma cliche’, knitting can be extremely therapeutic as well as a practical pastime. Knitting For Wellbeing is a group which gathers every Monday between 2pm and 4pm at The Red Brick Cafe inside the Wealdstone Centre and gives members an opportunity to learn new skills as well as making new friends. Membership is free, however, booking is recommended as the group is extremely popular.

Bowls

If fresh air and new friends are your thing, The Harrow Bowls Club might be a good fit. Based at Harrow Recreation Ground, Roxborough Road, the club offers friendly roll up sessions four times a week and free tuition from the experts.

Harrow Bowls Club also hosts Friday club nights with catering and a reasonably priced bar. Whether you’re a pro or an absolute beginner, the club offers a warm welcome to all.

Choirs

For on-song seniors, Harrow boasts a number of great choirs which welcome new members. Most of the choirs meet for rehearsals once a week in Harrow and Pinner and you can check these out in our recent article.

Fitness & Yoga

Keeping fit at any age is extremely important and attending a fitness class can help to add structure to your week. Better Gym in Pinner offers a number of classes for the over 60s including yoga, body conditioning and Pilates. Concessionary memberships start from £34 per month.

Harrow Health Walks

If you fancy stepping into new friendships while exploring our borough and staying fit, look no further than Harrow Health Walks. Led by qualified leaders, these walks are suitable for all ages and all levels of fitness and are a great way of taking gentle exercise while meeting new people.

Finding new hobbies

Retirement is the ideal time to take up a new interest and Harrow Arts Centre offers a number of classes and workshops for people of all ages including Paint And Draw A Portrait on Tuesdays (£18 per class), piano and keyboard lessons and Well Woman Yoga.
