Doing It For The Kids – A look at childcare in Harrow

For working parents, finding suitable and affordable childcare can be a constant uphill battle, with day nursery costs reaching around £263 per week (based on 50 hours per week).

While all children aged three and four are entitled to 570 free hours of nursery education per year, some families are also able to claim up to 30 hours a week and, in this article, we’re looking at childcare in Harrow.

Day nurseries in Harrow

There are a number of day nurseries in our borough – and we’ve included a snapshot of these below. Unfortunately, as with the rest of the country, these facilities are in demand and, often, there are simply no places available. To give themselves the best chance, parents are advised to apply as early as possible (some parents are actually putting in applications before their child is even born).

It’s also a good idea to apply for more than one at a time in order to spread the net a little wider.

Childminders and nannies

If a day centre isn’t suitable for your child(ren), another option is to hire a childminder or nanny but this can be extremely expensive. For those wishing to go down this route, Harrow Council has a list of qualified and vetted childminders on its website.

Childcare is anything but child’s play

Despite government promises and assertions, finding reliable, safe and affordable childcare is still very much a challenge for many parents – many of whom say that a huge amount of their salary is swallowed up by childminder or daycare fees. It’s always a good idea to do your research to find out exactly what help you are entitled to in terms of free childcare hours and financial assistance.
