Online petition set up to maintain free weekend parking at North Harrow car park

An online petition set up to maintain free weekend parking at the North Harrow Cambridge Road car park has been signed by over 300 people.

The car park, located opposite The Gym in North Harrow, has been free to use on weekends, but Harrow Council is consulting on implementing a Saturday charge. If approved, after the first free hour, there will be a charge of £1.20 for the next hour and a day rate of £3.00.

The petition, set up by members of the local community, including former Red Cup Cafe owner Reena Chotai and Community Champion Hugh Brown, states the following:

“For years, North Harrow (Cambridge Road) car park has been free to use at the weekend, providing a real boost to our local community.

“But now, Harrow Council is introducing Saturday parking charges, which will have a detrimental impact on North Harrow businesses and community organisations, and is at odds with the council’s supposed support for local business, not to mention their promise to put residents first.”

It continues, “Too many local businesses have been forced to close already. Weekend parking charges would especially impact the many independent businesses, who rely on free weekend parking as an added incentive for people to visit North Harrow.

“Furthermore, organisations such as North Harrow Community Library, Harrow Gateway and North Harrow Home Guard Club, hold regular events and activities that support our local community, including the elderly and those with learning disabilities. Such events and activities will be put at risk by these new charges.”

They noted a lack of public awareness regarding the charges, despite the consultation being officially published through a press notice in the Harrow Times.

“This has come as a complete shock to the local organisations we’ve spoken to, who weren’t even notified about these plans.” states the petition.

A spokesperson for Harrow Council said, “Cambridge Road Car Park will continue to offer one hour’s free parking throughout the week including Saturdays to help support local businesses and drivers.

“This was the only district centre car park in the borough that didn’t have charges on a Saturday. For fairness and consistency across all council owned car parks, we are consulting on introducing charges for Saturdays. If approved, after the first free hour, there will be a charge of £1.20 for the next hour with a maximum charge for the day of £3.00.

“Car parking charges help to fund our highway and transport improvements, but primarily help pay for upkeep of our car parks and enforcement.

“We will review the responses before a final decision is made by the cabinet member.”
