How to get involved in Harrow Parkrun as a participant or volunteer

Running, jogging, or walking through a park is hardly a new concept. However, in 2004, when 13 runners got together in Bushy Park in Teddington, a couple of years later, the event extended to Wimbledon, and by 2009, Parkrun had 54,428 members taking part in events in England, Glasgow, and Wales.

What is Parkrun?

In simple terms, Parkrun is a weekly event in a local area whereby local residents get together to complete 5k and 2K runs (or walks) in open spaces. As well as a means of staying fit, Park run offers people the opportunity to socialise and make new friends and, in many cases, the actual run will finish with coffee in a local cafe or establishment.

Parkrun in Harrow

Harrow’s Parkrun event takes place every Saturday at 9am sharp and involves a 5k walk, jog or run around Harrow Recreation Ground on Pinner Road. Following the run, members are invited to adjourn to the Harrow St. Mary’s pavilion (close to the starting area) for refreshments.

Anybody can take part in the Parkrun event which is free of charge, however you do need to register beforehand which you can do HERE. Once registered, you will need to bring a scannable cop of the barcode from your registration documents when you attend the event.

Can’t run, won’t run

If running isn’t your thing but you’d still like to get involved in Parkrun the good news is that a lot of local events are always on the lookout for volunteers. The role of volunteer involves a number of tasks including:

  • Marshalling
  • Timing
  • Recording of results
  • Behind the scenes tasks such as admin

This is a great way of becoming involved in these fantastic community events even if you’re unable to or don’t want to take part as a runner.

Getting started is a walk in the park

In 2024, Harrow Parkrun has, so far, completed 394 events with 9563 finishers and 689 volunteers – and keeps going from strength to strength. To get started as a runner, register on the website. If you fancy getting involved as a volunteer, get in touch by email at harrow@parkrun.com
