May Day at the Manor: Annual Harrow event to take place next month

Monday, the 6th of May 2024, is May Day – a national Bank Holiday celebrated to the fullest in Harrow, particularly at Headstone Manor

In this article, we’re looking at the popular May Day At The Manor and giving a sneak peak of this year’s event.

Fire and frolics

May Day was first celebrated in 900 AD with fire used as a symbol to bless cattle and livestock which were being moved to new pastures for the summer. During the festival, farmers would train cattle to jump over small fires – a tradition which was thought to prevent fairies from stealing their milk.

The celebrations included food and drink and a Maypole – A tall pole with ribbons hanging from the top which children would hold and dance.
