Living the Good Life: Where to find free fruit, veg and herbs in Harrow

If you’re old enough to remember the TV program The Good Life, you’ll know that the main characters, Tom and Barbara, opted for a simpler existence by growing as much of their own food as possible.

While most of us may not aspire to complete self-sufficiency, the cost of living crisis means that we’re all trying to cut costs where possible and so, in this article, we’re sharing tips on where to find cheap and free fruit, veg and herbs in Harrow.

Wild garlic

Used in any number of recipes including homemade garlic butter, wild garlic is in season between February and April and is identified by its multiple clusters of white flowers. In Harrow, wild garlic can be found at The Spinney in Canons Park as well as Stanmore common.

In season between August and October, blackberries are great for use in a number of desserts and drinks and they can be found in many places in the London Borough of Harrow including Whitefriars Open Space on Athelstone Road.

Pick your own farms

Throughout London and the surroundings there are a number of fruit and vegetable farms where you can pick your own produce to save a bit of cash and these include:

  • Bullscroft Farm in Rickmansworth
  • Portobello Fresh Juice Bar on Portobello Road
  • Parkside Farm in Enfield

Cassiobury Farm

If you prefer to let somebody else do the heavy lifting, Cassiobury Farm features a great farm shop where customers can buy fresh produce. The farm is also well worth a visit and holds events throughout the year.
