Over 100 people sign petition for Rickmansworth crossing improvement

Over 100 residents have backed calls for a pedestrian crossing in Rickmansworth to be made safer.

According to the petition, the crossing – at the junction of  – has “proven unsafe” for pedestrians, due to the speed of the traffic. It says, insufficient lighting makes it equally difficult for drivers during the night time and early mornings.

Started by local resident Allyssa Gregory, the petition calls on the county council to improve the safety of the crossing. It says this could be achieved by a range of measures – that could include improved visibility and a review of the street lighting and road markings.

It suggests it could include a reworking of the railings to improve visibility,  the installation of speed cameras or making the existing zebra crossing a pelican crossing.

Making the case in the petition, Allyssa says that the the petition comes from “a place of deep concern for the safety of my family, neighbours, and all who use our local crossing”.

She says her neighbours have  shared personal stories of accidents and near misses associated with using this crossing. She says in the petition: “We need action now before we count more accidents or worse yet – fatalities.”

The petition – which started on May 3 – has already been signed by 175 Hertfordshire residents. It will run until June 27 and can be found on the county council’s website, at www.hertfordshire.gov.uk

Commenting on the ongoing petition, a spokesperson for Hertfordshire County Council said: “We are aware of the petition that has been launched on our website and in line with our processes, if the petition receives enough signatures from people who live or work in Hertfordshire it will be directed to officers for further action and if necessary, be considered by an appropriate council panel.”
