Harrow brothers take on incredible 340km charity bike ride to tackle educational inequality

Two brothers from Harrow, Tianyi and Jinyi, are embarking on a 340km charity bike ride to tackle educational inequality in the UK. Their journey starts at Leeds United’s Elland Road football ground and ends in Harrow.

The ride will take place from Monday, June 24 to Wednesday, June 26. They will have a special send-off at Elland Road and will make overnight stops in Nottingham and Milton Keynes before arriving at Harrow School on the afternoon of June 26.

In just a few weeks, they have raised nearly £3,500 through their Just Giving page.

Tianyi explained: “We originally set a target of £5,000 but, thanks to the generosity of so many people, we are now hoping to raise much more. Educational inequality is an issue that is very close to both our hearts and we trust our cycle ride will raise both money and awareness of this vital cause.”

He continued: “We are very proud that we will be raising money for Harrow School’s charities and our local partner schools. Harrow has provided us with our second home, where we learn and relax. Our House has provided ample opportunity and support for us and we would like to enable others to enjoy the privileges we have had.”

Jinyi added: “Our cycle ride is going to be a massive stamina test for us, but we will be buoyed by the amazing support we have received, and are receiving, which will spur us on to complete the ride course and raise money for educational inequality, which is such an important cause.”

Hamish Haldane, the brothers’ House Master at Harrow, commented: “I am incredibly proud of Tianyi and Jinyi for taking the initiative to raise funds for a cause they truly believe in – giving opportunities to all children to discover and develop their talents, skills and passions. Their efforts are an example of living the School’s Values of Courage, Honour, Humility and Fellowship and their leadership, empathy, and determination is an inspiration to other boys in the House. I wish them the very best on their adventure.”

Tianyi and Jinyi’s charitable efforts tie in perfectly with Harrow’s Shaftesbury Enterprise Programme, which is an initiative focused on improving the educational outcomes and life opportunities for young people in the school’s neighbourhood.

The programme’s vision is to enable every young person in the school’s local community, irrespective of background, to thrive and achieve their full potential, find fulfilment, and progress to successful adult lives that allow them to contribute positively to society.

All boys in Tianyi and Jinyi’s House volunteer at Welldon Park Academy, where they read to primary school children every week and occasionally help them with their maths. This project enables Harrovians to play a part in helping the children meet their attainment targets.

The proceeds of this marathon three-day ride will be split between Harrow’s charities and local schools, and the Leeds United Foundation, the charity arm of Leeds United.
