Stanmore Broadway came alive with colour and music yesterday afternoon as hundreds of Hindus participated in the Jagannath Rath Yatra celebration.

The parade, held on Sunday, July 7, saw devotees making their way from Marsh Lane to the Broadway, bringing a burst of festivity to the streets of Stanmore.

Participants were spotted in bright traditional attire, many of them wearing rain covers just in case the weather took a turn. Luckily, the skies remained clear, allowing the celebration to proceed without any interruptions. The highlight of the parade was a beautifully decorated chariot, accompanied by lively music and clapping from the crowd.

Police escorted the procession along the route, ensuring safety and smooth progress through the streets. The parade not only showcased the rich cultural heritage but also brought the local community together in a joyous display of unity and spirituality.

The Jagannath Rath Yatra, also known as the Puri Rath Yatra, is one of the most significant Hindu festivals. This annual event commemorates the journey of Lord Jagannath, along with his siblings Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra, from their temple in Puri to the Gundicha Temple in Odisha, India.

The festival falls on the second day of the Shukla Paksha in the Ashadh month of the Hindu calendar, which this year coincided with July 7.

The Rath Yatra festivities begin with various rituals, where the deities are bathed, adorned with new clothes and jewellery, and placed on grand, elaborately decorated chariots. These chariots, known as Rathas, are remarkable for their intricate wood carvings and bright fabrics, embodying the spirit and devotion of the festival.
