Enchante To St Jerome – A look at Harrow’s French school

When it comes to schools, Harrow might be best known for the big one on the hill but our borough also boasts a number of other great and diverse seats of learning and, in this article, we’re taking a peek at St Jerome’s.

Situated opposite “the big Tesco” on Station Road, Harrow, you’ll spot the distinctive signage of the Saint Jerome Bilingual School. Named after scholar and Biblical translator, Saint Jerome, the school caters to children from Reception to Year 6.

While St Jerome is commonly known in Harrow as ‘the French school’, children are not required to be able to speak French on admittance.

The school does, however, have a strong focus on languages which is a large part of its appeal to parents. On a daily basis, aspects of the school’s curriculum are taught in French and, throughout the year, students will participate in cultural activities relating to the French calendar in order to strengthen vocabulary and phonic skills.

Contrary to popular belief, Saint Jerome is a non-fee paying school (although, as with other schools, nominal fees apply for some activities), however, it does offer only a limited number of places each year – usually no more than 60 Reception age children.

The school does offer a small number of Christian Faith Foundation places each year which are awarded on merit.

Although Saint Jerome is listed as a Church of England school, it very much welcomes children from all cultures and faiths to reflect our culturally diverse society. Planning ahead For parents looking to enrol their child at Saint Jerome, the school offers open days each year in January.

As with all school placements, places are limited and so parents are advised to begin the process as early as possible to avoid disappointment.
