Bentley Priory Museum in Stanmore has launched a new temporary exhibition, “Pilot Peril and Daring Rescue!”, highlighting the critical role of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) in rescuing pilots shot down during World War II.
This exhibit offers families an engaging way to explore history through a range of activities designed for children.
The exhibition draws on real stories from pilots and lifeboat crews, including a notable rescue of a French soldier with his Guinea Pig. Children visiting the museum can learn to make parachutes, use a heliograph, and signal with flags. They can also search for hidden Guinea Pigs throughout the museum galleries to earn a prize.
Supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the museum offers free admission to children aged 12 and under during the summer holidays until August 31. Each paying adult can bring up to two children for free.
The museum is open on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and August Bank Holiday Monday, from 10:00am to 4:00pm.
Eleanor Pulfer-Sharma, Museum Director, shared her enthusiasm, saying, “Children visiting over the summer holidays are enjoying learning about the bravery of both the pilots and RNLI crew through the hands-on activities ‘Pilot Peril and Daring Rescue’ and collecting their chocolate ‘wet socks’ reward money once they’ve found all the hidden Guinea Pigs!”
