An event at Greenhill Way car park last night brought together local traders, Labour councillors, residents, and political figures, including Gareth Thomas MP, to express strong opposition to the recent introduction of evening parking fees in Harrow and Wealdstone town centres.
The gathering highlighted concerns within the community about the potential negative impact that Labour claims these fees could have on the area’s nighttime economy, particularly in Harrow Town Centre.
Previously, parking was free during the evenings, allowing both customers and workers to park without charge. The new fees, which could reach up to £15 per night, have raised alarms among some local businesses who fear the charges will drive customers and workers away, potentially leading to a decline in trade and the local economy.
Chris Perdue, owner of Trinity Bar on Station Road, shared his concerns: “The potential effects of these charges would be catastrophic, leaving many workers no choice but to seek jobs in central London. The £15 per night it would cost them to park in Harrow is simply too much for many of our workers to afford.
“With all the strains brought on by the cost-of-living crisis, if we lose access to free parking as well it may not be long until nightlife in Harrow gets squeezed beyond repair. This is especially disrespectful after I and other business leaders were assured 18 months ago that the council would protect our evening economy; these evening parking charges make a mockery of that commitment.”

Councillors, including Cllr David Perry, Leader of Harrow Labour, also criticised the decision. “The Conservative Group have promised to rejuvenate Harrow’s nightlife; however, this policy does the exact opposite, forcing unnecessary pressures on workers and customers already struggling with the cost-of-living crisis. If they don’t reverse these evening parking charges, there is a serious risk that Harrow’s night-time economy could decline.”
In response, a spokesperson for Harrow Council stated, “All our car parks will continue to offer one hour’s free parking. For fairness across all council-owned car parks, we have looked at the charges as part of our annual review. Greenhill Way Car Park was offering long periods of free overnight parking, which was inconsistent across all our car parks and open to abuse. These charges help to fund our highway and transport improvements, but primarily help pay for upkeep of our car parks and enforcement.”
The council noted that the new fees were part of a broader review approved in February and that a statutory consultation was carried out, with information published in the Harrow Times and in all car parks.
The campaign against the charges continues, with a petition available for signing online.
