St. Teresa’s Catholic Primary School in Harrow Weald recently involved its year 6 pupils in a community initiative aimed at giving back.
The programme, which is part of the school’s summer term curriculum, saw the children volunteering at the Wealdstone Baby Bank and Primrose House Care Home.
Mrs. Thornton, Head Teacher at St. Teresa’s, said: “Our Year 6 pupils take part in a programme of giving back to the community as part of their summer term curriculum. As a Catholic school, part of our mission is to serve others and to ensure that our pupils live out their faith in action.

“We use the themes of Catholic Social Teaching to teach the children about human dignity and preferential option for those less fortunate than us. The children are taught that to treat others with love, kindness and respect is to treat them with dignity and that everyone should be treated with dignity.
“By volunteering in the local community, they have been able to see how their actions can benefit the lives of others. The children have really enjoyed taking part in this project and we hope that this has instilled in them a lifelong ambition to serve their local community.
“We are so proud of the difference they have made and look forward to expanding our programme in the years ahead.”
The Wealdstone Baby Bank, one of the organisations benefiting from the pupils’ efforts, also provided positive feedback about the children’s involvement.

Aghileh from the Wealdstone Baby Bank said: “It’s really lovely to have the kids here to help us out. They might come from very different circumstances, or they could be one of the families that come to use the baby banks.
“We hope that by coming here to volunteer, the children see what we do, and we can begin to destigmatise the use of baby banks. The children from St. Teresa’s were very willing to help and get involved.”
