Harrow’s recycling centre has been shortlisted for the Household Waste Recycling Centre of the Year Award 2024 at this year’s Local Authority Recycling Advisory Committee (LARAC) awards.
This recognition shows the centre’s efforts to improve recycling services for residents. Also, using technology to manage missed bin collections has earned Harrow’s waste service a spot at the LGC Workforce Awards.
Despite not being as large as other local authorities, Harrow’s recycling centre is impressive, offering 25 different outlets for waste. The centre sees around 18,000 visitors each month, facilitated by a seamless booking system that has gained popularity among residents. Staff continuously work on boosting recycling rates, which has helped divert more waste from incineration year after year, and significantly reduced the amount of general waste brought to the site. These ongoing efforts have led to the centre being recognised in the LARAC award finals.
Harrow’s Waste Development Team is also a finalist for the LGC Workforce Awards in the “Back Office Heroes” category. Their innovative use of technology in managing missed bin collections has dramatically improved the customer experience by reducing missed collections. The collaboration between digital and waste teams has resulted in a more proactive and efficient approach to dealing with issues, ensuring residents receive a better service..
Cllr Stephen Greek, Cabinet Member for Performance, Communications & Customer Experience, said: “It’s great to see all the hard work of our teams recognised. Over the last two years there has been significant improvements to help residents recycle better and ensure they receive quality service.
“There’s still more to do to give residents better recycling facilities. Congratulations to our teams for making to the finals of these two awards. I wish them all the best when the awards take place soon.”
