A resident at Buchanan Court care home in Harrow has celebrated her 100th birthday with a special event.
Ethel Luck, who turned 100 on 3rd October, marked the milestone with a celebration organised by the team at Care UK’s Buchanan Court on Sudbury Hill. The home was decorated with balloons, banners, and a birthday cake made by the Head Chef. Ethel enjoyed the occasion surrounded by her family and friends.
When asked about her secret to living 100 years, Ethel said: “Get active and stay positive!”
Ethel was born in 1924 in a basement flat in Agar Grove, near St Pancras Station, where her father worked. At the age of 15, during World War II, she was evacuated to Western-super-Mare with her three younger brothers to escape the bombings in Camden.
After returning to London, she trained as a shorthand typist and worked at the British Drug Company until the war ended. She later worked at KIGU, a company producing jewellery and compacts, where she met Harry Luck, a cabinet maker. The couple married on Christmas Eve in 1949 at St Paul’s Church. They went on to raise two children, Anne and Jackie, in Barnet.
Ethel has always been active, taking up ballroom dancing, ice skating, and swimming in the sea. Her family often visited Herne Bay in Kent so she could swim. After settling into their home, Ethel developed a passion for gardening and baking, especially for her grandchildren.
Esther Oluwatosin Adams, Home Manager at Buchanan Court, said: “Ethel is a much-loved resident at Buchanan Court, and it was fantastic to help her celebrate this incredible milestone with her friends and family.
“Here at Buchanan Court, we are committed to helping residents live active and fulfilling lives, so we love to celebrate incredible milestones – and Ethel’s 100th birthday is no exception. It was lovely to raise a glass together on her special day with her extended family here at Buchanan Court. Happy birthday Ethel!”
