Residents in Harrow have expressed concerns about the proposed redevelopment of a historic building on Kenton Road.
Known as “The Travellers Rest,” the building has been a fixture in the community for decades. Rebuilt as a pub/hotel in 1933, it was once the largest public house in Middlesex.
A public consultation was held on Tuesday, October 8, at the site, with two more scheduled. The next drop-in exhibition will take place on Saturday, October 12, from 10am. to 2pm. at the same location, 134 Kenton Road. An online survey is also open until October 20 for those unable to attend in person.
The redevelopment proposal includes transforming the site into a new residential community. Whitbread PLC, the company behind the project, states, “We have an opportunity to create a new and exciting neighbourhood community, with a design inspired by its ‘metroland’ surroundings.”
The plan involves 118 build-to-rent apartments, 106 co-living units, and a new restaurant on the ground floor.
The site currently houses a Premier Inn Hotel and Beefeater, described as “two separate and dated buildings surrounded by extensive car parking.” The redevelopment aims to improve accessibility, sustainability, and energy efficiency at the location.
Whitbread PLC stressed their commitment to community input: “Ahead of submitting a planning application to Harrow Council, we want to hear your feedback to shape the development of our plans for 134 Kenton Road, and understand how we can work with local partners.”
They highlight that the plan aligns with the London Plan’s target of 802 new homes per year for Harrow.
