The Northern Lights made a rare appearance over Harrow, with striking photos taken in Wealdstone, North Harrow and the town centre last night.
The natural light display, known scientifically as the aurora borealis, painted the skies with vibrant colors, delighting local residents who captured the moment.

The northern lights occur when charged particles from solar winds interact with gases in Earth’s atmosphere. These particles enter through the planet’s magnetic poles, creating a dazzling aurora.
During strong solar events, such as Coronal Mass Ejections (CME), the light display can extend further south, making it visible in parts of the UK, including Harrow.

The colours depend on the type of gas and altitude, with oxygen creating green or red light, and nitrogen producing blue or purple hues.
Members of the Harrow Online Facebook Group shared their excitement, reporting sightings and sharing photos, with some of the best images emerging from Wealdstone and North Harrow.
The Met Office had earlier indicated that the aurora would likely be visible over Scotland and Northern Ireland. They posted on X, “Look north in the coming nights and you may spot the #NorthernLights.

“A coronal mass ejection from the sun is earth bound and whilst there’s some uncertainty on its arrival time, sightings of the #aurora are likely in northern areas with a slight chance in the south too.”
Harrow’s residents were fortunate to witness this natural phenomenon, adding a touch of magic to the autumn skies last night.
