An investigation has been launched following a report of antisemitic messages being raked into bunkers at Hendon Golf Club.
Police were contacted by a member of the club’s staff on Friday, 11 October. In addition to the hateful messages, other property at the golf course was also damaged.
Detective Chief Inspector Daniel Branch of the North West Command Unit, which covers Barnet, commented: “We are aware of the shock and distress that this incident has caused, especially coming at a time when the Jewish community is celebrating Yom Kippur.”
The incident is being treated as a racially aggravated hate crime, and officers from the North West Community safety unit are leading the investigation. Police are working to identify and arrest those responsible.
Following the incident, police have attended the golf course and spoken with community leaders to provide reassurance and ensure regular updates on the investigation. Local residents will also see an increased police presence in areas across the boroughs in the coming days.
“We take all incidents of hate crime extremely seriously and I would urge anyone with information that could assist in this investigation to call 101 or ‘X’ @MetCC and quote CAD1690/11Oct.
You can also provide information anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111,” added Detective Chief Inspector Branch.
