Harrow is set to launch a new early stroke discharge service, aimed at reducing hospital stays and providing community-based rehabilitation for stroke patients.
Previously, patients in Harrow faced a 6 to 8-week wait before leaving the hospital, in contrast to neighbouring Brent, where patients were discharged within 24 hours. The new service will ensure that patients in Harrow with mild to moderate stroke-related disabilities are assessed and treated within 24 hours, receiving the same level of rehabilitation at home as they would in the hospital.
The rehabilitation service is designed to help stroke survivors gain greater independence and reduce their chances of being readmitted to the hospital. It will provide up to six weeks of support following acute discharge.

Pippa Nightingale stated, “Harrow has a higher-than-average incidence of stroke given the age and ethnicity of its population and I’m delighted the local integrated care board has made this happen.”
She added, “The community rehab programme will also be available in residential and nursing homes and the team will be working towards the gold medal standard of care.”
