Family appeals for information after man dies in Harrow from asbestos-related cancer

The family of a former carpet fitter, Peter Chapman, who passed away from an asbestos-related cancer, is appealing for information from his former colleagues to assist with a legal investigation.

Peter Chapman, who died in Harrow at the age of 73 on 29 November 2022, had been diagnosed with mesothelioma, a type of cancer caused by exposure to asbestos.

He had worked as a carpet fitter in the 1960s and early 1970s for several companies across London, and before his death, Peter shared with his family that he had been exposed to asbestos during his work.

An inquest confirmed that Peter died from mesothelioma, classifying it as an industrial disease. His family is now seeking assistance from anyone who may have worked alongside him during his career.

Peter’s former wife, Rita Craig, also recalled that part of his work involved cutting doors, some of which may have contained asbestos panels. The companies Peter worked for during his career include the following:

• Maples Carpet Factory, Camden: Early 1960s
• Premier Carpet Planners Ltd: 1965 to 1966
• Charles Page (Furnishers) Ltd: 1965 to 1966
• H & A Carpet Planners: 1967 to 1968
• Wordsworth Carpet Planners: 1967 to 1969
• A O Carpet Service (London) Co Ltd: 1970 to 1971

The family has instructed the asbestos team at law firm Leigh Day to investigate a potential legal claim and is now reaching out to anyone who may have worked with Peter during his time as a carpet fitter.

Rita Craig, Peter’s ex-wife, said: “Peter’s death came as a huge shock as he died very suddenly. If anyone who worked with Peter could share any information they can remember with our legal team, it would mean a lot to us.”

Leigh Day solicitor Andrew Cooper added:
“Asbestos was used in many forms during the 1960s and 1970s and has been found in flooring, tiles and carpets which were installed during that period. We are appealing for anyone who worked alongside Peter Chapman to get in touch.”

If you have any information that may assist in the investigation, you are encouraged to contact Andrew Cooper at Leigh Day via email at acooper@leighday.co.uk or by phone at 020 3780 0430.
