A £270,000 investment has been made to boost street cleansing and expand enforcement efforts across Harrow. The initiative focuses on ‘restoring pride in the borough’ with a neighbourhood-based approach.
The funding has allowed for neighbourhood-focused street cleansing teams to be deployed, enabling staff with local knowledge to address issues swiftly. Residents will now see more activity from their local street cleaners, who start work in the early hours to keep thousands of streets across the borough free of litter.
In addition to the street cleansing teams, the enforcement team has been expanded to tackle illegal fly-tipping. Last year, 1,147 fines were issued for fly-tipping, with the fine amount now increased to £1,000. The new team will focus on investigating reports, finding, and fining offenders, and deterring others from fly-tipping.
Cllr Pritesh Patel, Cabinet Member for Cleaner Streets and Public Safety at Harrow Council, said: “Everyone wants cleaner and safer streets. It’s one of the things residents always tell me about.
“That’s why we’ve invested £270,000 into street cleansing and expanded our enforcement team to find and fine those dumping waste illegally. It’s part of our plans to restore pride in Harrow. And our new ward based street cleansing approach means our staff know their local area and can address issues quickly.
“Fines for littering and fly-tipping have also increased to help deter these people from making our borough dirty. And we’ve also launched a wall of shame to find those making our neighbourhoods dirty and unsafe.
“We can’t do this alone. We need your help to identify those fly-tipping, and also to report street cleansing issues through our website so our teams can take the necessary actions.”
