Transport for London (TfL) has announced a new plan to increase and enhance toilet facilities across its network, committing £3 million per year over five years.
This initiative aims to make toilets more accessible and ensure that passengers are always within 20 minutes of a toilet without needing to change trains.
As part of the first phase, TfL will convert non-accessible toilets into accessible facilities at selected stations, including North London locations Sudbury Hill and Seven Sisters, alongside Amersham and Green Park.
New toilets will be introduced at stations like Camden Road and South Tottenham.
London Transport Commissioner Andy Lord highlighted the importance of these facilities, saying, “Access to toilets is important for all customers when using public transport, but is a vital enabler for some, especially older customers, people with disabilities and those with young children.”
Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said, “Toilet provision is critical for many Londoners and visitors, and can even determine whether somebody travels on public transport at all. That’s why I’m planning to make the biggest ever investment to increase toilet provision across TfL services and boost accessibility.”
TfL’s expanded toilet programme also includes refurbishing existing facilities, improving cleaning standards, and ensuring accessible toilets for all. Age UK London’s Campaigns Manager, John McGeachy, supported the plan, noting that public toilet access is essential for older people and can help more Londoners travel without restriction.
The plan aligns with TfL’s commitment to accessibility and aims to reduce travel barriers for passengers across London. For details on the location of toilets across the TfL network, TfL has provided a dedicated Toilet Tube Map on its website.
