Belmont School in Harrow celebrated National School Meals Week with an event featuring superhero costumes, songs, and a traditional British roast. The event was organised in collaboration with HCL, a school catering company, to promote healthy eating among students.
The school, which recently received the OPAL Platinum Award for enhancing playtimes, was chosen as a case study on free school meals by London Mayor Sadiq Khan. Students participated in the “Feel Good British Lunch” theme, which encouraged them to eat vegetables and embrace the idea of becoming “superheroes” for the day.
HCL’s CEO, John Want, attended the event alongside Vicki Hislop from Bidfood. Students received superhero capes for eating their vegetables and joined in singing the “I love my veggies” anthem.

John Want said: “Visiting Belmont School for National School Meals Week was truly inspiring. Seeing the children embrace healthy eating with our Great British Good Food menu, and their enthusiasm for our Superhero Veggie characters, reinforces the importance of nutritious school meals. Together, we’re empowering a generation to make healthy choices, and it’s wonderful to see them becoming ‘superheroes’ with every bite!”
Since HCL began providing meals at Belmont, there has been a significant increase in the uptake of free school meals, with over 90% of pupils now having a meal.
