A hospital manager from Harrow will be taking on a challenging 3,000km journey across India this December to raise money for charity.
Jayshree Shah, who works for vascular services at Northwick Park Hospital, is joining a convoy of 36 auto rickshaws, or Tuk Tuks, as part of a fundraiser for Shishukunj, a charity supporting underprivileged children.
“I’ve never been behind the wheel of a rickshaw or driven on Indian roads,” said Jayshree, who will be one of 107 volunteers travelling from India’s southernmost point to Gujarat in the north.
Jayshree will share driving duties with her brother and sister-in-law over the 12-day journey, staying in ashrams and hostels each night. The convoy will be supported by a crew of cooks and mechanics along the way.
The fundraising effort aims to build a teacher training centre in Bhuj, Gujarat, to support a school the charity has already established.
“There will be a fair share of sore bums but it is all for a good cause,” said Jayshree, who will take a crash course in operating the ‘twist and go’ Tuk Tuks, which have a top speed of 40kph.
“I’m really looking forward to the challenge. It will make a nice change from sitting behind a desk,” she added.
Jayshree has previously raised funds by completing four marathons and trekking in the Himalayas.
