Open-air festive concert to celebrate global Christmas traditions in Wembley Park

Wembley Park’s open-air Sound Shell will host A Global Christmas: A Thousand Years of Festive Music Through Cultures and Time on Saturday, 7 December 2024, from 1pm to 6pm. The free event will feature music from around the world, celebrating the festive season through various global traditions.

The concert will include performances of Caribbean steel pan rhythms, Motown classics, Tamil choirs, and traditional English carols, with Wembley Stadium’s iconic arch as the backdrop. The event is set in Brent, the UK’s second most diverse borough, where over 150 languages are spoken.

The concert will feature a mix of traditional and modern music. Caribbean steel pan orchestras will reinterpret carols through calypso rhythms, while Balkan bands will share seasonal harmonies from Eastern Europe. A British brass quintet will perform carols as they would have been heard in Victorian England. Other performances will combine ancient instruments like the hurdy-gurdy and hammered dulcimer with Indian dhol drums, blending Arabic, Andalucian, Celtic, and South Asian festive sounds.

Claudio Giambrone, Head of Cultural Programming at Wembley Park, said: “Christmas music has always known no borders. Medieval European carols borrowed from Middle Eastern melodies, African American spirituals became gospel standards, and Latin rhythms pulse through today’s popular holiday hits. ‘A Global Christmas’ celebrates those connections, showing how Christmas music lives and breathes through cultural exchange.”

The programme will also include live readings of seasonal classics, such as ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas, Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Match Girl, Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, and Raymond Briggs’ The Snowman.

Attendees are encouraged to arrive early, as the event is subject to capacity. Seating may be limited, so bringing blankets is recommended. Food vendors will provide seasonal treats and hot drinks.
