The Metropolitan Police could see 2,300 officers and 400 staff lost next year due to a £450 million funding gap, Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley has said. Speaking to the London Policing Board, he warned the cuts will have “a seriously detrimental impact” on the force, which currently has 33,473 officers and 11,178 staff.
Sir Mark explained that previous measures such as selling off buildings and using reserves “is no longer possible” as demands on the force continue to grow. He noted that key units such as the Flying Squad, the dogs unit, and the mounted branch will all be affected, potentially as early as January.
In Harrow, where a tri-borough policing force is already in operation, these cuts could have significant impacts. Reduced resources may hinder efforts to tackle serious violence and organised crime in the area.
The Commissioner’s comments highlight the mounting challenges for the Metropolitan Police as it faces increasing pressures with fewer resources to meet them.
