Northwick Park Hospital’s Maternity Unit has been given a clean bill of health by the Maternity Safety Support Programme, marking a significant milestone for the team.
The unit was added to the national programme four years ago after a Care Quality Commission (CQC) report highlighted the need for major improvements.
Since then, staff have worked closely with the National Maternity Safety Programme to improve care for the 3,700 births supported by the unit each year.
Vacancy rates are now below 2%, retention has increased, and investment in the obstetric team has helped strengthen services. Facilities at the unit have also been upgraded, including the birth centre, triage unit and induction of labour suite.
The refurbished facilities were officially opened last year by Myleene Klass, who met with staff and addressed midwives at the event.
Myleene said: “I am eternally grateful for all you are doing. Seeing your work has set me on my path to ensure all women get the support and maternal healthcare that they deserve.”
The improvements have led to low stillbirth and perinatal mortality levels, along with better staff morale and leadership.
Positive feedback through the NHS Family and Friends Test has also reflected the Trust’s commitment to listening to local women, including through the Northwick Park Maternity and Neonatal Voices Partnership, which is chaired by local mums.
Caroline Macrae, Director of Midwifery, said: “We’ve come a long way in the past four years and, while there is room for further improvement, I am proud of the team.
“Positive cultural change has been a big ingredient in our improvement journey, and I look forward to continuing to further meet the needs of local people.”
The unit will now be monitored by the North-West London Integrated Care Board to ensure ongoing progress.
