Rayners Lane ward has seen a significant reduction in crime since the launch of a police-led operation last year, according to Harrow MPS.
A statement from local police reveals that overall crime in the area has dropped by 25% since Operation Velmara began in September 2024. The initiative was commissioned by Superintendent Writer and backed with £15,000 of central funding from the Metropolitan Police Service.

Inspector Johnson oversaw the operation, with Sergeant Whomes leading efforts on the ground. A mix of visible policing, surveillance, plain clothes patrols, and targeted interventions has been used to tackle long-standing issues including street drinking, aggressive begging, and youth-related anti-social behaviour.
The police said: “From early morning walk throughs to late-night reassurance patrols, Harrow Police have been everywhere, making their presence known, felt and trusted.”
The results include:
- A 50% reduction in violent crime
- A 39% drop in thefts
- Noticeable reductions in street drinking and begging
- A decline in youth-related anti-social behaviour
Officers have also worked to build stronger connections with the community. “Harrow Police made it a priority to speak with residents every day, check in with shopkeepers, and reassure commuters using the station,” the statement added.

Local police say the area is now calmer and more confident, with a renewed sense of pride. They credit the ongoing engagement and visibility of officers with helping to shift the tone of the area.
