Around 100 people evacuated after electrical substation fire in North West London

A fire at an electrical substation in Maida Vale has led to a major emergency response this morning (29 April), with around 100 firefighters and fifteen fire engines called to the scene.

The blaze broke out at Aberdeen Place, where crews discovered an electrical transformer alight. The fire, which also affected the roof and a flat in a neighbouring residential block, is now under control. However, firefighters remain on site to fully extinguish the flames.

Around 100 people were evacuated from nearby buildings. A rest centre has been set up by the local authority and no injuries have been reported. UK Power Networks confirmed the fire has not disrupted electricity supplies in the area.

Assistant Commissioner Pat Goulbourne said: “This was a very visible fire with Control Officers taking over 170 calls. The fire has also been producing a lot of smoke and although the amount of smoke has significantly reduced, we continue to advise residents to keep their windows and doors closed at this time. One of our scientific advisors is on site and is closely monitoring the air quality in the area. Around 100 residents were evacuated from their homes but some have now returned.

“Due to the fire involving a high-profile piece of infrastructure that was affecting nearby residential buildings, a major incident was declared by London Fire Brigade at 0826. I am pleased to report that this declaration was stood down at 1053.

“However, firefighting operations will continue for some time on the transformer at the substation. To combat this technically complex fire, crews have been deploying foam to suppress the flames. The foam works by smothering the fire and cutting off its fuel source, preventing reignition.”

A 32-metre turntable ladder has been used to tackle the fire from above, and the Brigade’s drone team is assisting by providing aerial images to the Incident Commander.

The fire was first reported at 5:29am and crews from Paddington, Euston, and other surrounding stations have been attending the incident throughout the morning.

Firefighters are expected to remain at the scene for most of the day. The London Fire Brigade is working with UK Power Networks and the Metropolitan Police to determine the cause of the fire.
