New £87m investment to boost cycleways across London, following success of Burnt Oak to Colindale route
Transport for London (TfL) has announced more than £87 million in new funding for boroughs across London to create safer, greener and healthier streets.
The investment, confirmed for 2025/26, will fund new cycle routes, School Streets schemes, and pedestrian crossings across the capital. Many of the new cycleways will be similar to the one linking Burnt Oak and Colindale, Barnet’s first dedicated cycleway, which opened in March 2024.
The Burnt Oak to Colindale route provided a shared pedestrian and cycle path between the two neighbourhoods, forming part of the planned 17-mile Barnet Loop. TfL says the new investment will help expand London’s Cycleways network and make it easier for people to walk, cycle and run in their local areas.
Walking and Cycling Commissioner, Will Norman, said: “Creating greener and safer streets in London will enable more people to choose active travel to get around, and this is vital to achieving the Mayor’s environmental targets.
“This funding for boroughs, a significant increase on last year, shows the Mayor’s commitment to improving walking and cycling in London, and we look forward to continuing working with boroughs to build a better, safer and greener London for everyone.”
The funding is part of a three-year agreement with all 32 London boroughs and the City of London, with £87.6m set for the first year. TfL plans to deliver up to 95km of new cycle routes, 222 new School Streets schemes and 265 new pedestrian crossings.
Christina Calderato, TfL’s Director of Strategy, said: “Boroughs play a vital role in improving local transport networks, which is why we’re really pleased to be significantly increasing our investment with them this year.
“This investment will enable boroughs across the capital to tackle road danger, increase the reliability of our bus network and contribute to the continued expansion of Cycleways in London. We will continue working closely with every borough to show that, together, we can create cleaner, safer roads across London that encourage people to walk, cycle and use public transport.”
