Harrow Council launches monthly ‘Drop & Go’ waste events

Harrow Council has announced a new initiative to make it easier for residents to dispose of waste and unwanted items, with the launch of monthly ‘Drop and Go’ waste and recycling events.

The first event will take place on Saturday, 17 May 2025, from 10am to 2pm at Cambridge Road Car Park in North Harrow. Each month, a different part of the borough will host an event aimed at helping residents recycle better, reduce fly-tipping and keep the area clean.

Residents will be able to drop off waste and recycling, bulky waste, small electrical items, and more. Free food waste caddies and liners will be available, and people can also sign up for garden waste collection and get advice about Harrow Council’s waste and recycling services.

Attendees will need to bring proof of ID, just as they would when visiting the main recycling centre. Each household can bring up to five items, with one bag of recycling or rubbish counting as one item. Items must be manageable by the resident without assistance.

Cllr Stephen Greek, Cabinet Member for Performance, Communications and Customer Experience, said:

“We’re helping residents do the right thing when it comes to waste and recycling. We’ve recently doubled the number of bulky waste bookings, and now we’re going further by taking the recycling centre into the community.

“During our drop and go events, residents will also get to take food waste bins and bio bags, as well as information and advice on good waste management. It’s our way of putting residents first – by giving them more options, and better access to our services. We’re hopeful that these events will help to reduce fly-tipping.”

The initiative is part of Harrow Council’s Flagship Action in the corporate plan, which aims to increase recycling rates to 35% and restore pride in Harrow by keeping the borough clean and safe.

At each Drop and Go event, residents can:

  • Dispose of up to five items (including small electricals, bulky waste, and textiles)
  • Pick up a free food waste caddy and liner
  • Sign up for garden waste collection

Accepted items include:

  • Small electricals and electronics (e.g. toasters, kettles, laptops, TVs)
  • Bulky waste (e.g. furniture, mattresses, carpets)
  • Household waste not suitable for normal bins (e.g. broken toys, DIY waste, wood, glass, textiles)
  • Scrap metal and old tools
  • Garden items, furniture, equipment and toys

Items that will not be accepted:

  • General household rubbish that fits into standard bins
  • Hazardous waste (including paint, chemicals, asbestos, petrol, or diesel)
  • Car parts or tyres
  • Pressurised containers

Harrow Council has advised residents not to leave items at the site before the event starts. Doing so will be treated as fly-tipping and could result in a £1,000 fine.

The events will take place monthly on weekends, with future dates and locations to be announced on the Harrow Council website.
