Uxbridge fast food business fined over £16,000 after serious food hygiene breaches

A takeaway and restaurant in Uxbridge has been fined more than £16,000 following serious breaches of food hygiene regulations uncovered by Hillingdon Council.

Hutt Grill Ltd, trading as Hutt Grills at 34 Cowley Mill Road, was ordered to pay a total of £16,491 at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 13 May. The company pleaded guilty to seven offences under the Food Safety and Hygiene (England) Regulations 2013.

The business was fined £8,000, ordered to pay a £2,000 victim surcharge and £6,491.20 in prosecution costs to the council.

During a routine inspection on 27 March 2024, food hygiene officers found dirty kitchen areas, broken equipment, and a lack of temperature controls. Cleaning products were available but there was no evidence they were being used. A fridge was broken, and the walk-in freezer showed a temperature of 30 degrees Celsius. Staff presented dirty food probes with no means to clean them.

The premises were rated zero for food hygiene, meaning urgent improvement was required. The council issued two hygiene improvement notices and one improvement notice on 10 April. The business agreed to temporarily close.

At a follow-up inspection on 12 July, officers found that the business had reopened but had no hot water, no disinfectants for cleaning, and no soap at the wash basin. Staff said the hot water had been off for several days, contradicting the owner’s claim that it had stopped that morning. The business again agreed to temporarily close.

In court, the business accepted responsibility and apologised for the failings. Since the investigation, staff have completed hygiene training, and the business has addressed issues relating to allergens. It was later given a food hygiene rating of three (Generally Satisfactory) on 4 November 2024.

Cllr Eddie Lavery, Hillingdon Council’s Cabinet Member for Community and Environment, said: “All businesses serving food have a legal responsibility to uphold basic standards of cleanliness and training for staff, and neglecting to do so will not be tolerated.

“Our food health and safety team works hard to regularly inspect businesses and support them to make improvements, but we will not hesitate to intervene and take action if we find any that are not following regulations and putting their customers at risk of serious harm.”
