St Gregory’s Catholic Science College in Kenton has won the Best Campaign award at this year’s Travel for Life school awards, organised by Transport for London (TfL).
The school, which sits on the border of Harrow and Brent, was recognised for its drive to create positive change by launching a community petition aimed at tackling a busy junction near the site.
The annual Travel for Life school awards were held on 19 May at the Kia Oval, celebrating schools across London that promote safer, greener and more active travel for pupils. St Gregory’s was one of seven schools to receive gold accreditation and school vouchers for their efforts.
The Travel for Life programme, delivered by TfL in partnership with London Councils and the London Transport Museum, encourages schools to reduce car use and support active travel such as walking, cycling and scooting.
London’s Walking and Cycling Commissioner, Will Norman, said: “TfL’s Travel for Life schools programme is helping the next generation of Londoners understand the importance of safer, greener travel. It’s great to see schools leading the way in building a cleaner capital and supporting the Mayor’s vision for a healthier, more sustainable London. Congratulations to all schools involved for their brilliant work!”
TfL’s Chief Health, Safety & Environment Officer, Lilli Matson, added: “Congratulations to all the schools involved. It’s so rewarding to see young people coming together for a cleaner city by choosing cycling, scooting and walking and to reduce harmful emissions from cars when travelling to and from school. It’s important to keep this momentum going.”
The awards also align with Living Streets’ Walk to School Week, taking place from 19–23 May, which encourages children across the country to travel actively and understand the benefits for health and the environment.
