Wealdstone Post Office on Headstone Drive is set to become a franchise branch later this year, as part of a wider plan affecting dozens of Post Offices across the UK.
The change will see Universal Office Equipment (UK) Ltd (UOE), an experienced retail partner, take over the running of the branch. UOE already operates several Post Office branches and stores across London and the surrounding area. The transition is expected to happen in August or September 2025.
A letter published by Post Office Ltd confirms: “The branch will remain in its current location and continue to offer the same range of services. The existing team will remain in place and there will be no changes to the accessibility of the branch.”
Opening hours will mostly remain the same, except on Tuesdays when the branch will open slightly earlier at 9:00am instead of 9:30am.
This change is part of a national move by Post Office Ltd to franchise all of its remaining directly managed branches, also known as Crown Post Offices. A total of 108 branches are affected across the UK. The goal, according to the Post Office, is to make services more financially sustainable and to reinvest in the wider network.
In April 2025, Post Office Ltd said: “We need to change the way we operate the remaining directly managed branches to address the circa £40m annual losses being made at these sites and support the broader aim of increasing postmaster remuneration by £250 million by 2030.”
Franchising is not a new approach for the Post Office. Many branches around the country are already successfully operated by independent retailers and business partners, including in supermarkets, convenience stores and high street chains.
However, the move has attracted criticism from some quarters. The Communication Workers Union (CWU), which represents many Post Office employees, warned that the plans risk job losses and could reduce service quality. In a statement, the union said the changes amount to “backdoor privatisation”.
Despite this, the government has backed the Post Office’s transformation plans, with up to £83 million set aside for 2025/26 to help protect services in rural and disadvantaged areas. An additional £136 million will be used to upgrade branch technology, including the replacement of the controversial Horizon IT system.
For Wealdstone residents, the main message is that services at the local branch are set to continue – just under new management. Posters will be displayed in the Post Office over the coming weeks to keep customers informed.
No public consultation is taking place, but Post Office Ltd said: “We would welcome feedback on any areas that customers would like us to consider as we finalise our plans.”
