New trains are being introduced on services that run through Watford Junction and Bushey stations from next week, London Northwestern Railway has confirmed.
The operator officially launched its new Class 730 fleet on Friday morning (6 June), with the trains due to start carrying passengers from Monday, 9 June.
The Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, welcomed the move, following ongoing discussions with the train company after local concerns were raised over overcrowding.
Peter Taylor said: “It was great to see the launch of London Northwestern Railway’s new Class 730 trains. After campaigning for better train services in response to residents’ concerns about overcrowding, I am delighted that this feedback has been taken on board. These new trains will make a real difference for people travelling in and out of our town every day.”

In April, the Mayor raised concerns after a reported 50% increase in short-formed trains (services running with fewer carriages than scheduled), which had led to regular overcrowding and people struggling to board trains at peak times.
Since then, he has held a series of meetings with London Northwestern Railway to address the issue and press for service improvements at both Watford Junction and Bushey stations.
The new Class 730 trains come with a range of features including:
- Free WiFi throughout
- USB and plug sockets at every seat
- Underfloor heating and responsive air conditioning
- Improved passenger information screens
- Bike storage for up to three bicycles
- At least one accessible toilet per train
The update is expected to bring significant improvements for commuters travelling to and from Watford and surrounding areas.
