Dozens of people from London’s Indian community gathered at a Hindu temple in Harrow on Saturday to pay tribute to those who lost their lives in the devastating Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad.
The crash, which happened just minutes after take-off on Thursday last week, claimed the lives of 241 people on board Flight AI171. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner was en route to London Gatwick when it struck a medical college shortly after departing from Ahmedabad. Only one person is believed to have survived the tragedy, and investigations into the cause are ongoing.
Many people attended the vigil held at the International Siddhashram Shakti Centre on Palmerston Road, Wealdstone. A book of condolence was available for people to sign, and special prayers were held during the service, which was open to people of all faiths or none.
Leader of Harrow Council, Cllr Paul Osborn, said: “On behalf of Harrow, I want to share my condolences to all those affected by the devastating plane crash in Ahmedabad. My thoughts are with the families who have lost a loved one, and those still anxiously waiting. I know this tragic event will be felt deeply here in Harrow, not least by our British Indian community who will have strong ties to the region and may know a family member or friend affected.
“If you are affected, please follow the government advice. We are in touch with our community and faith leaders in Harrow, and together we remember and grieve the tragic loss of life. I encourage people to join Harrow Interfaith’s memorial service taking place tomorrow.”
Mayor of Harrow, Cllr Anjana Patel, also shared her sympathies: “I am deeply saddened to hear about the tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad, India today. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and everyone affected by this devastating incident. Harrow is home to a large Indian community, and I know this may affect many residents who have family and friends here in UK and in India. The UK Government is working closely with Indian authorities to urgently offer support to those involved. If you are affected please follow advice from the government.”
