Harrow has recorded the lowest rate of foot and leg amputations among diabetics in the UK, according to new national data.
The findings highlight the success of a local healthcare collaboration between GPs, community and hospital podiatrists, endocrinologists, radiologists, pharmacists, and the vascular team at Northwick Park Hospital.
Their joint efforts have made it possible to quickly identify and refer high-risk patients for early examination and treatment, significantly reducing the need for amputations.
Mr Selva Theivacumar, consultant vascular surgeon and clinical director of vascular and endovascular services at London Northwest University Healthcare NHS Trust, said: “I’m very proud that we have the lowest amputation rates in the UK, despite Harrow having the highest number of diabetics in the country.”
Selva’s team treats up to 400 patients each year using both surgery and interventional radiology techniques to clear blocked arteries that can cut off blood flow to the legs.
“It’s an extremely painful and debilitating condition that leaves people struggling to walk even short distances without severe pain or suffering from ulcers on their feet or legs,” he added.
“This is a great example of primary and secondary care working together for the benefit of the local community.”
