Two Harrow Council waste collection crews have been praised after they helped save a young girl who was seen hanging from the roof of a house during their morning rounds.
What began as a routine bin collection took a dramatic turn when a food waste crew spotted the girl in a dangerous position. Realising the immediate risk to her life, they quickly alerted colleagues from a nearby recycling team. Working together, the crews found a mattress in a skip nearby and placed it on the ground beneath the girl.
Moments later, she lost her grip and fell — but thanks to the mattress, she avoided serious injury. Emergency services were called to the scene and the girl is now receiving appropriate care and support.
Cllr Stephen Greek, Harrow Council Cabinet Member for Performance, Communications and Customer Experience, said: “This could have ended differently but thanks to the quick-thinking actions of our crews, they’ve saved someone’s life. I’m incredibly proud of them for going above the call of duty, putting our residents first, while carrying out an essential service for Harrow households. I’d like to thank them for their courage and bravery.”
The crews continued with their work after the incident. One of the team members involved is pictured.
